I bought one of these (new) about four years ago to upgrade an existing group of networked PC's to a single printer (each previously used individual ones). "Simply," in a matter of minutes, this thing was installed and all the PC's with it. This is one of those "painless" solutions! The installation wizard that came with it was a gem. It easily found the printer on the network & configured everything automatically! An icon showed up for updates. "Click" and twenty seconds later it said, "We had the latest software." The same printer is still working without a hitch. Fantastic!

I bought another, new HL-5250DN for another office about a year later. I installed it. It too is still running. There have been no problems.

In January 2009, I bought two of these "refurbished" models: one for my personal use, one as a gift for a family with three networked computers and a lot of school work. I have noticed no difference between the new and the refurbished, except the price savings. So, why buy new anymore? And, considering the price; it would be hard to be disappointed.

I regard this as the best black & white laser printer on the market. It has a duplex which works flawlessly & saves on paper. It's the only printer I use. It's all I recommend to others. It is reasonably priced. It is reasonable to run. Replace the toner cartridge with the high-yield choice and find it delivering 7,000 sheets. Get an additional paper tray & that works well too!

Brother has given us a superior hardware product capable of being used, "stress-free," by the average non-technical person. I call it a "simply" fantastic printer!

What a bargain! This printer is simply excellent and unlike a lot of other printers in this price range you actually get a large toner cartridge with it instead of those sample size carts some brands rip you off with.

Pros:

- Very fast and the warmup time is very short
- It's got ethernet which I connect to my Airport wireless to share with all the computers in the house.
- East setup: I pretty much connected it to the network, it appeared on my Mac and I printed a test page.
- The paper tray is large enough for my needs.
- Not overly noisy

Cons:

This printer can suck a lot of power starting up. If you have a lot of appliances on a 15A circuit the breaker may trip during the print cycle and cause a paper jam. I have read more about this problem than I have actually experienced but you may need to load balance your appliances over different circuits in your home if you have a lot of them.

My next printer will be a Brother but at this rate I may never get there this one is so reliable.

First the good. Don't hesitate to order the refurb model. It looked brand new. Even though the drum had a sticker saying it was only 90% full, the printer told me it was 99% full. It prints *fast*. Duplex is great and paper saving. Having it on the network is a dream. I can print from laptops and desktops all over the house.

Now the bad. The page curling complaints others have mentioned are real and significant. If you print a number of pages single sided, then you'll end up with a mess. My spouse prints large documents and she basically has to babysit the printer so she can pull pages out and straighten them because of this curl problem. I don't know why this printer has it...I haven't seen curling like this since the mid '90's in a laser printer. The problem is a real drag.

When the printer arrived I had to spend a bunch of time trying to figure out why it wouldn't wake up after sleeping. It's a known problem. Read the discussion on this Amazon page for the answers--it was the *only* place on the 'net I found them (including Brother support).

So, overall, it is still a good value. However, had I known just how bad the curling problem really is, I would have researched a bit more in case I found something else just as good but without the curl.
